Calais was born on April 6. She is a strong and substantial dark bay filly with a typey head and lovely conformation, including a well-placed neck, medium length back and strong hindquarter. Her sire, Freudenfest, was the Champion of his approvals and has proven to be both a talented riding horse and an exceptional sire. Conceived via frozen semen, this filly is one of the first (along with the 2006 filly Kapri) to be born in the United States.

Her dam, Cara Bella, is by Buddenbrock, out of Coeur Neuf by Elite Stallion Mackensen. Coeur Neuf is a full sister to the dam of the legendary stallion and performer Caprimond. Cara Bella has also shown herself to be a willing partner under saddle.
